Toronto-based guitarist/composer Michael
Occhipintis debut CD,Who Meets Who, highlights nine
of his own first-rate original compositions, performed by his
excellent eight-piece band. The music is contemporary, exploring
modern acoustic moods (Enzo and Flavia, Mölln),
fusion (Art to Arthur, Dont Hum) and free
styles (Who Meets Who). The CD is released independently
on Occhipintis own label, Auracle.
Occhipinti possesses a long list of credits to his name, in
terms of both accomplishments and education. Along with pianist
Paul Neufeld, he co-leads NOJO (Neufeld-Occhipinti Jazz
Orchestra), a 16-piece big band. NOJOs debut CD was awarded
the 1995 Juno for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, and the group has
just released its follow-up, Fire Water. Occhipinti has
studied with a number of international jazz greats, such as Don
Thompson, Mick Goodrick and Rufus Reid.
Occhipintis octet is made up of a number of strong
Toronto-based musicians, including Dave Restivo on piano, Kieran
Overs on bass and Kevin Turcotte on trumpet on selected cuts. The
highlight of this CD is without a doubt the leaders
compositions. Each piece is well-crafted, and generally the
performances are skilfully executed. Occhipintis guitar
playing is featured throughout the CD, both in the form of solos
and as an accompanist. His playing is generally strong, although
it lacks the warmth and personality that reaches out and makes
you want to listen.
Overall, Occhipinti has put together a fine CD which
demonstrates his talents as a writer, musician and band leader.
If you like contemporary jazz and fresh ideas, you will enjoy
this disc.
Michael Berard is a guitarist and educator.
