1 Why are some musician's biographies not available in the language I have chosen?

The information displayed on a musician's page has been provided by them or their agent. If the biography was only submitted in one language, then that biography will be displayed regardless of the language chosen by the visitor. In the future, we hope to have volunteers who will translate these biographies.
2 Why are there missing entries in the listings?

The listings are entered directly by the clubs and venues and they are responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of the information. Please inform us if you find a venue's listings consistently inaccurate and mention this to their manager the next time you visit that club or venue.
3 I have a question about the Jazz Festival.

Jazz Montreal is not associated with the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal. Please visit their site www.montrealjazzfest.com for additional information. Our festivals page has all the information we have about festivals in the Montreal area.
4 Sometimes I get a completely blank page without any error messages, what went wrong?

Usually it is a problem on our server. We are sorry about that but this site is very new and you are all helping us test it. If you find a consistent problem, please write us and tell us what page you were on and what option you selected (copy the url from your browser for the blank page if possible.)
5 The site looks weird and the fonts all look the same.

This has to do with your browser. Please upgrade to a newer version. Any version of Netscape 4 and better and Internet Explorer 4.0 and higher should work. (The site looks best when viewed with a minimum resolution of 800 x 600.)
6 Can I buy the CD's listed on the site from you?

We presently don't sell anything. Try our online affiliate Archambault.ca. Many of the discs listed on the site have links to the labels and you could try and contact them. For independent recordings, you will have to try and contact the musician either by email (included on the bottom of the musician's biography) or by attending a performance. (As a last resort, if you send us a message we will try and forward it to the musician or their agent if possible.)
7 How do I get in contact with a musician?

Many musicians include an email address at the bottom of their biography page. If there is no email address, you could forward us a message and we will try (no promises) to pass it on to the agent we have on file.
8 There is a photo I like, can I get a copy?

Copies of photographs are obtained from the photographer directly. For photos in our gallery, we have provided contact information on the gallery pages. For other photos, the credit line will indicate who the photographer is. It may be possible for us to make contact with this person, please provide you name, address, telephone number and email address. Photos displayed on the site are set at a low resolution to improve download times.
9 I'm a fan of Jazz, what does registration provide me with?

By registering with Jazz Montreal, you can customize your own home page to customize listings to highlight performances by selected musicians or particular venues. You can request to be kept posted of certain news items and you will be able to participate in our forums in the near future. By registering you will be able to add your rating to recordings listed on our site. If you have the time, you might consider contributing a review or article for the site.
10 How do I suggest a site I would like to to include on your list of links?

We are always interested in hearing about sites to be included here. Send us the URL and a brief description as to what the site is about if it is not obvious from the home page of the site.
11 There is some incorrect information on a page, to whom do I write?

It depends on which page. If it is on a musician's page or a venue, that information was provided by them. We will forward you query to them if possible. For other pages, let us know and we will correct the information. (Please be specific and include the URL of the page.)
12 How can I help and how much time is involved?

We NEED help, any amount, big or small. Jazz Montreal is a volunteer run web site so there is no money in it. If you want to help, just register and ask for Editor, Contributor or Moderator access and someone will be in touch with you by email or phone. You need to have web access as all activity on the site is done online.
13 Sometimes there is a delay when I log in, am I doing something wrong?

This is a known problem. Our server has a lot of work to do when you are authenticated. Bear with us and hopefully this will improve.
14 I can't log in

Verify your user name (it is case sensitive) and password. If you can't remember your user name, use the lost password page to request that your user name and a temporary password be sent to your email address. (Note: the email address must match that you used when you registered or that you later modified on this site.)
15 I don't remember my password.

Go to the lost password page and request a temporary password. A new password will be emailed to you and you can use it to log in to Jazz Montreal once. When you log in, you will be sent to the change password page where you should enter the temporary password as the old password and then enter a password of you choice. (The new password is required to be entered twice so it can be confirmed to be identical.)
16 I have a temporary password but I still can't log in.

Check your user name (case sensitive) and make sure that the temporary password has been issued to you within 24 hours. These passwords expire within 24 hours and can only be used once. You can request a new temporary password if the current fails.
17 When I log in, the system requests a confirmation number.

The first time you log in, the web site will request the confirmation number that was sent to you by email when you registered on the site. If you have lost this number, you should request a temporary password (use the lost password link) and you will be emailed a password to use. Use this password to log in and then you will have to reset your password.
18 Am I going to receive "spam" by providing you my email address?

No, we will not sell, lend or email on behalf of any third party unless you specifically authorize it. Jazz Montreal may email the occasionally bulletins about new features on the site. (See our privacy policy for further details.)
19 I want to register but I don't have an email address.

There are several free web-based email services that can provide you with an address. Some to check out include mail.yahoo.ca, netscape.com and hotmail.com.
20 Why do you want my telephone number even though I only want basic access?

We requested you telephone number so that we can confirm your identity. (This will only be done on a random basis and if we detect aberrant behaviour.) Your number will not be distributed or use for any other purpose. (See our privacy policy for further details)
21 My friend is a jazz musician in Montreal, can I add their biography?

Yes, but be sure they want you to. First register as a musician's agent, then fax us an authorization form indicating that the musician wishes you to act on their behalf for the purposes of this site, add their biography and request that it be published. The biography will be reviewed and the authorization confirmed before it will be posted. Click here for a sample form.
22 You have my biography posted and I need to edit it.

If you posted the biography yourself, just log in and select the Add/Edit musician link, then select your name and you should be able to edit it. Once you have completed editing the biography, it will be queued for review and will be "published" to the site. (The reviewers do not edit the biography but just assure that the content is relevant and will add or edit links to improve the visitor's experience of the site.)
23 I'm trying to upload a photo for my biography but it always says that it failed.

If you are using an older browser there might be difficulty uploading files. Another restriction involves the size of the file. We presently limit the file size to 1 MB. If the problems persists, email the scanned photo as an attachment. (If you send it by email be sure to include your name!)
24 I don't have a scanner, how do I get a scanned copy that I can submit to the site?

Many copy shops provide scanning facilities. Scan your picture there, then post your picture via the web site or send it by email. (If you send it by email be sure to include your name!)
25 How long does it take for submissions to be posted?

Usually most requests can be acted on within two to three days (sometimes it might be the same day). Jazz Montreal is a volunteer run web site so things sometimes can take a while depending on the number of requests and the availability of the volunteers.
26 Can I upload a sample of my music?

Not at this time. We don't have the available bandwidth to provide this service. You can provide a link on your biography to another server where you may store your sample. We hope that sometime in the future a sponsor will be able to provide funding to supply this service.
27

I am a musician and the club has yet to post my gig.

Musicians (or their authorized agents) can post their own listings once they have been authorized. However, the venue can alter or remove these entries.
28 How do I get a gig at the Jazz Festival?

Jazz Montreal is not associated with the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal. Please do not email us but visit their site www.montrealjazzfest.com for additional information.

29 Can you book a gig for me at a Montreal club?

Clubs and venues are not associated with the web site. At the bottom of a venue's page, the venue provides optional booking information. Please contact them directly by their preferred means.
30 Can I put a link to Jazz Montreal on my site?

Please do. Our URL is "www.jazzmontreal.com" We even have a banner you could use if you like. (Click here to get the banner) If you wish to link directly to a particular page, please read the answer to the next question.
31 What about "deep linking" to the site?

No problem as long as you display the whole page. However, we would ask you to register (ask for extract access) and enter the pages you would like to link. If we remove any of these pages or make significant changes (e.g. break them down into several separate pages), we will inform you by email so you change the link on your site if necessary.
32 Can I republish information from your site?

Depends on the page. Information from the musicians' biographies and venue descriptions maybe freely copied (We request you credit us if possible.) For columns and other articles, the authors reserve the copyright and they must provide their approval prior to republication, including other web sites These pages have an additional copyright notice at the bottom of the article similar to "All rights are reserved by the author <author name> <email address if available>." Please, if possible, contact the author directly, otherwise send us an email and we will attempt to forward it to the author.
33 Do you have a way I can automatically "extract" certain information from your site in real time to include elsewhere?

This facility is under development. If you wish to be informed when it is available, please email us. The same rules as for republication apply (see previous question)
34 Can I advertise on Jazz Montreal?

We do not have a banner rotation and as such we do not provide advertising space. However, we are looking for sponsors to help us defray the cost of providing additional services for our visitors.
35 How do I get a CD or book reviewed on Jazz Montreal?

Jazz Montreal is accumulating a list of volunteers to review discs, books and performances. If you wish to have your CD or book reviewed, please email us so that we may provide you with a delivery address. As we are working with a group of volunteers, we cannot guarantee that any particular item will be reviewed. Volunteers will be given a single item to review and will not be eligible to receive a second item until a review has been submitted for the previous item.
